Bombs Away in Caribou! Mercy, Mercy, Me!

The John Bapst Crusaders ended their season with a "BANG" on Saturday by sweeping the Caribou Vikings in 2 mercy rule games, 21-3 and 10-0.
Balls were flying out of the park in game one as Chris Hammond had 2 home runs, Bill Wetherbee- 1 round-tripper, and Keith Nelson launched a 'bomb' over the RF fence for a 3 run home run. The game ended in the 5th with Bapst on top, 23-1
Jason McBurnie was the winning pitcher going 3 innings. Nick Christie and Ryan Carr both pitched a scoreless 4th and 5th inning respectively.

In game 2, Matt Storgaard didn't allow a run in his 5-inning stint while giving up just 4 hits and striking out 2 to clinch the sweep.
The ball stayed in the park in game 2 but Bapst added 13 more hits to go with their 10 runs.

Offensively on the day:
Ryan Carr was 2 for 7, scored 3 times, and knocked in a run.
Bill Wetherbee was 5 for 8 with a walk, home run, stolen base, scored 5 times, and had 4 rbis.
Chris Hammond was 4 for 7 with 2 home runs, scored 3 times, and had 6 rbi's.
Matt Storgaard was 3 for 7 with 2 walks, 2 doubles, scored 5 runs, and had 1 rbi.
Adam Leadbetter was 2 for 6 with a double, 2 walks, and an rbi.
Nick Christie was 2 for 6 with a double, a walk,2 rbi's and scored a run.
Max Andrews was 1 for 4 with 2 walks, 3 rbi's, and scored a run.
Sean O'Donnell was 4 for 6 with 6 rbi's, a double, and scored a run.
Jason McBurnie was 1 for 4, scored twice, walked, stole a base, and had 1 rbi.
John McEwen pinch ran and scored.
Brandon Cyr singled and scored.
Lucas Wardell walked and scored.
Josh Storgaard reached base, had an rbi, and scored.
Keith Nelson stroked a 3- run home run.

The boys end the season strong with a very good 10-6 record, and according to tonight's Heal Points move into 5th place. However; there are many teams yet to complete their seasons, and the standings show place #'s 4-10 to be fairly close. If JB finishes #7-10, they'll play a preliminary game on June 8...time and place TBA. If they finish 6th or better, they'll play a quarter final game on June 10th...time and place TBA.
There will be NO varsity practice on Monday, Memorial Day as previously planned. Enjoy the day with your families and study for finals!

JV's wrap up their season, I believe, on Thursday. Players should bring a change of clothes to the last game to change into so that uniforms can be collected.

JV Crusaders drop one to Eagles

On a nice day for baseball (once you got through the construction traffic) the JB JV's faced a tough Ellsworth Eagle team. Things started off well with John Bapst scored five runs in the opening frame thanks to RBI singles by Adam Patrick and Daniel Davis but Ellsworth answer with eight of their own. That was apparently a sign of things to come as Ellsworth outslugged John Bapst 16-6. Adam Patrick contributed another RBI in the second inning with a double deep to left field. Jordan Carr drew 3 walks. Starting pitcher Evan Pelkey was relieved in the third by Kurt Massey. John Bapst falls to a very respectable 8-2-1. Next up is our Saturday double header against the Vikings of Caribou. First game is scheduled for a noon start at Husson U. Thank you to everyone who is contributing to our between game meal. Time to start a new winning streak.

Andrews Lifts Crusaders to Huge Win Over Ellsworth on Senior Day!

Down 5-4 to Ellsworth in the 7th inning,Designated Hitter Max Andrews sent a "seeing-eye-single" between 1B and 2B with the bases loaded to rally the John Bapst Crusaders to a comeback walk-off 6-5 win over the 4th place Ellsworth Eagles on Thursday.
With the win, John Bapst moved from 10th to 7th as they head north on Saturday to Caribou for a season-ending double header.
The game had plenty of drama as 2 of Eastern Maine's finest teams went toe-to-toe.
The Eagles scored in the first inning on a single, stolen base, and triple, but stranded runners at 2nd and 3rd. In the bottom half of the first, Ryan Carr reached on a 2 base error. He scored on a Chris Hammond single to tie the game at 1. The Crusaders left the bases loaded in the first after Leadbetter singled and Christie worked a walk.
The Eagles struck again in the 4th inning with a leadoff walk, stolen base and single to go up 2-1. Bapst sent 9 batters to the plate in the bottom half of the 4th and scored 3 runs to go up 4-2. Ellsworth chipped away with another run in the 5th and then 2 more in the 6th to take a 5-4 lead. Hammond was able to dispose of the 4-5-6 hitters in the top of the 7th and then it was time for some heroics. With one out, Matt Storgaard fought off a couple of nice curve balls and then shot a hard single up the middle. Leadbetter then reached on an error by the shortstop. The Eagles pitcher balked and both runners moved over to 2nd and 3rd with one out. Nick Christie worked a walk to load the bases and then Max Andrews hit the first pitch he saw between 1B and 2B to score the tying and winning runs. Needless to say the nice crowd on Senior Day was ecstatic, and the boys are to be commended for never giving up and battling all day long to claw out the upset win.
Chris Hammond was a "warrior" on the mound. He did a great job keeping his composure with men on base and battled is way out of a couple of tough jams. He pitched a complete game giving up 6 hits and striking out 3.
Adam Leadbetter made 2 outstanding plays at first base; one on an infield throw that he stretched to barely keep contact with the bag, and the other was in the top of the 7th on a liner heading towards the foul line that he leapt and caught to get the crowd onto their feet and fire up his teammates.
Ryan Carr was also instrumental at his shortstop position, making some fine plays to help keep the Eagles at bay.
Offensively for Bapst; Carr reached on an error, scored, and walked. Wetherbee walked in a run. Hammond singled and had an rbi. Matt Storgaard singled and reached on a fielder's choice. Adam Leadbetter singled, walked, reached on an error and scored twice (including the game winning run!). Christie walked twice, reached on an error and scored. Max Andrews had the game-winning single, Sean O'Donnell singled, scored, and had an rbi, and Jason McBurnie joined in the fun with a single, walk, and rbi.
Good luck on Saturday boys! Thanks for making Senior Day one we'll definitely remember!

JV Boys win over Mattanawcook

Husson University's Winkin Complex was the site for a 6-5 win on Monday over
the Mattanawcook Academy Lynx, bringing the boys record to 8-0-1.

Mattanawcook scored four runs in the first inning, and the team's
determination allowed them to chip away at the lead for several innings,
allowing Mattanawcook only one more run after that, in the 3rd inning.

Nolan Webber pitched a solid game, and showed a great amount of poise in
settling down and going to work in the ensuing innings. Nolan pitched 5
innings, striking out 5 and walking only one. Adam Patrick pitched the
final two innings, striking out two and walking one.

John Bapst scored one run in the first inning on a walk to Shawn Curran
followed by an Andrew Catlin triple. The boys then scored 2 more in the
second on walks to Stephen Leonard and Jordan Carr, followed by a double
steal. Stephen scored on a passed ball, and Jordan scored on a Kyle Somers
RBI fielder's choice. In the 3rd inning, Kurt Massey led off with a base
on balls, then advanced on an Adam Patrick fielder's choice, eventually
scoring on an RBI single by Nolan Webber. Kyle Somers led off the 4th with
a single, followed by a walk and a steal for Shawn Curran, a fielder's
choice, and a passed ball to score Shawn. The next two innings were scoreless. Adam Patrick led off the bottom of the 7th with a walk, and
Josh Baker pinch-ran fro Adam and quickly stole second base. Stephen
leonard then ripped a ball to right field, scoring Josh with the winning
run in exciting walk-off fashion.

The JV's next match-up is Wednesday the 26th at Bucksport.

John Bapst JV's Win Big Over MDI, 11-2

The John Bapst JV's travelled to MDI on Friday for a 4:30 game, coming away with
a big win over the Trojans and improving their record to 7-0-1.

After a scoreless first inning (despite a double by Lucas Wardell), the boys
came out with a vengeance in the 2nd inning, scoring 4 runs with 2 outs on a
couple of walks, followed by a Stephen Leonard single, an RBI double by Dan
Davis, and a 2 RBI single by Lucas Wardell.

In the 3rd inning, Adam "Buddha" Patrick reached base on an error, then stole
second with a thunderous slide into second and advanced to third base on a
passed ball. Shawn Curran walked and stole a base, then Jon Deschaine scored
Adam with a fielder's choice. Stephen Leonard drove in two runs with a single,
for a total of three runs.

In the 4th inning, Lucas Wardell walked, advanced to second on a passed ball,
and scored on an RBI single by Evan Pelkey. MDI blanked the Crusaders in the
5th, but the boys continued their 2 out magic in the 6th when T.J. Cormier was
hit by a pitch, advanced on a passed ball, and scored on a Preston Selmon RBI
single. Preston advanced on yet another passed ball, Josh Baker walked, and
Jordan Carr drove Preston home with an RBI single. The boys added another run in
the 7th when Lucas Wardell reached base for the 4th time in the game via a 2
base error, then advanced to third and eventually scored on 2 fielder's choices.

Evan Pelkey pitched a great game, going the distance for the win with 3
strike-outs and just 2 walks. Keeping the ball down in the strike zone was a key
factor, resulting in 13 ground ball outs. In the final inning, the boys nearly
pulled off a picture-perfect 6-4-3 double play, but an overthrow to first made
it look like that wasn't going to happen, until the overthrow was caught by
Lucas Wardell who had hustled down the line to back up the play (great
fundamentals!), eventually achieving the double play 6-4-2-4-3.

The next match-up is against Mattanawcook Academy on Monday at 4:30 at Husson
University's Winkin Field

ball with 15 strike-outs and only two walks, giving up no runs and earning the
win. Shawn Curran came in to relieve Max for the 7th inning, giving up two hits

On the offensive side, John Bapst scored a run in the first inning via a base on

of an error, stolen base, and passed ball, but again couldn't get the run
across.

Solid defensive play was again a key to the win, as the boys only committed one

John Bapst JV’s Take Two at Presque Isle

The John Bapst Memorial High School Crusaders travelled to Presque Isle Saturday
for a doubleheader. The boys had a great day – here are some highlights, sorry
if I omit anyone who deserves more credit!!

In the first game, the boys jumped out to an 8 run lead, highlighted by
aggressive base running and excellent ball contact. Jon Deschaine led off with a
walk and a steal, and the boys never looked back after that. The game featured
solid defensive play and a stellar performance by pitcher Nolan Webber, who took
a no-hitter into the 5th inning, finally giving up a hit with one out in the
fifth, the last inning played due to the mercy rule. Nolan helped his own cause
with a couple of base hits and an RBI, plus a great stab on the mound in the
final inning. Kurt Massey reached base numerous times, being hit by pitches
twice, walking, and doubling. Deven Romain also reached base numerous times via
a walk, a single, and a couple of errors. Nolan ended up with 5 strike-outs,
with only 1 walk, and faced only 3 batters over the minimum for a 5 inning game.
The final score was 21-0, with everyone getting in the action in one way or
another.

In the second game, the boys jumped out to a 3 run lead highlighted by a Josh
Baker triple followed by a Jon Deschaine RBI single. Evan Pelkey and Adam
Patrick singled as well. They gave up 3 runs to Presque Isle in the bottom of
the inning followed by 2 more in the 3rd and another run in the 4th, falling
behind 6-3. In the 5th inning, with two outs, Jon Deschaine reached via an error
and scored after a steal and an error, making the score 6-4. Evan Pelkey
doubled in that inning as well. The score would remain that way until the 7th
inning, when Jon and Evan reached via errors, then were delivered home by a
monstrous clutch hit double by Adam Patrick, who advanced to third on the throw
to home. After that it was a barrage of hits by Kurt Massey (RBI), Andrew
Catlin, Deven Romain, Dan Davis (2 RBI), and Jon Deschaine (RBI, steal). When
all was said and done, 8 runs were scored, and after holding the Presque Isle
team in the bottom of the inning, the boys came away with a fantastic 12-6
come-from-behind win. Jon Deschaine pitched the first three innings, recording 4
strikeouts with only 1 walk, followed by Evan Pelkey for the next 3 innings,
recording 3 strikeouts and only 2 walks.

McBurnie 2-Hits Lynx

John Bapst pitcher Jason McBurnie spun a nifty 2-hitter and gave up just one unearned run to pace the Crusaders past the Mattanawcook Lynx, 11-1 in a 6 inning mercy rule game.
McBurnie pitched to contact and didn't allow MA's best hitters to hurt him as he struck out 4 batters in the 6 inning contest.
Bapst struck early in the first inning when Hammond singled, Wetherbee walked, Christie had an infield single, and Leadbetter picked up an rbi when he walked. The Lynx tied it in the bottom half with a run of their own with a double and error. They would never score again. In fact no other runners made it past 2nd base the rest of the game as the Crusaders made every play in the field.
In the 2nd inning, JB came up with 4 runs when Andrews walked, O'Donnell singled, Hammond singled in 2 runs, Wetherbee walked, and Christie double home 2 more runs. JB went on to score 2 more runs in the 4th, 5th, and 6th innings to ice the win.

Bucks Shutout Crusaders

Bucksport's Evan Eldridge shutout the John Bapst Crusaders on Friday, 2-0.
Eldridge was able to keep the JB bats at bay surrendering just 4 singles on the day.
Bill Wetherbee, Ryan Carr, Nick Christie, and Jason McBurnie all had base hits.
Chris Hammond had another good day on the mound. He allowed 4 hits, walked 3, and struck out 4. Both runs were unearned.
*Matt Storgaard had a tremendous play in LF contributing to a double play. As Bucksport's Cody Farrell attempted to steal 2b, Storgaard caught a line shot in LF off the bat of Tyler French and gunned a throw straight from LF to Adam Leadbetter at 1B IN THE AIR to help complete the unconventional double play.
JB came into the game as the #4 Class B team in the East. (Bucksport was #5). JB goes to 4-2 on the season.
Don't forget the Bottle Drive on Saturday from 9-noon. Dropoff points are at Leadbetter's on Wilson St. in Brewer and Leadbetter's on Stillwater Ave. in Bangor. Thanks for your support.

Crusaders Defeat Hawks To Go To 4-1

Taking advantage of 2 errors in the first inning and making the most of their 7 base hits on the day, the John Bapst Crusaders defeated a determined Hermon Hawk team on Thursday, 6-4.
Jason McBurnie was cruising along with a one-hitter until the 5th inning when Hermon's cleanup hitter hit a sinking line drive to right field that Nick Christie dove and caught. A double and 2 errors later, Hermon had their first run. In the 6th the Hawks struck again. 2 triples, 2 singles, and a walk plated 3 runs to get the Hawks within 2. In the 7th inning, Hermon started a 2-out rally with 2 singles and Chris Hammond came on in relief to strikeout the final batter and preserve the win for McBurnie who goes to 3-0 on the season. Jason struck out 4 and walked just one on the day.
Offensively for the Crusdaders, Ryan Carr was 2 for 4 scoring 2 runs, Bill Wetherbee walked and scored, Chris Hammond singled in 2 runs, Adam Leadbetter singled twice, walked, scored and knocked in a run, and Max Andrews and Matt Storgaard both had singles and scored a run each.
Bapst travels to Bucksport today to take on their rivals in what should be an exciting game between two of the top teams in Class B East. Good luck!

Bapst JV's Quiet Coyotes

On a beautiful Saturday afternoon for baseball, the John Bapst JV squad pulled out a 5-4 victory in Old Town. Bapst was led on the hill by Jon (the escape artist) Deschaine who got the win by pitching the first 5 innings and escaping 2 bases loaded jams. Nolan Webber pick up the save, stranding the tying runner on 3rd. Sharp defense all around, highlighted by Deven Romain throwing a runner out at the plate from center field. Offensively Deven also chipped in with two hits and scored the decisive run. Adam Patrick contributed an RBI double and Evan Pelkey and Dan Davis knocked RBI base hits. Next up is a contest versus the Bangor Christian Patriots on Thursday afternoon.

Storgaard and McBurnie Lead Crusaders to 3rd Win

Matt Storgaard's bat caught fire today as he singled, doubled, and tripled to drive in 5 of the 10 JB runs and help the Crusaders defeat Old Town for the 2nd time this week, 10-0.
The game ended in the 5th inning when Bill Wetherbee was intentionally walked and Ryan Carr stepped to the plate with a runner at second and promptly ripped a double over the left fielder's head to end the game early.
Jason McBurnie looked great again, and the Coyotes are probably happy not to have to see him again this season. In 5 innings he struck out 4, didn't walk a batter, gave up just 4 hits and threw just 52 pitches.
Offensively for JB- Bill Wetherbee was on base 4 times from his leadoff spot; he doubled, scored, walked twice and was hit by a pitch. Ryan Carr was 1 for 3 with a double, run scored and an rbi.
Chris Hammond continues to swing a hot bat. He was 2 for 3 with a double, scored twice, and drove in 2 runs.
Adam Leadbetter walked and scored. Nick Christie was 2 for 2 with a Sac fly, rbi, and run scored.
Sean O'Donnell was the defensive player of the game as he made 2 fantastic back-to-back catches in CF. He also scored a run.
Storgaard was the offensive catalyst from the 8 spot giving the Crusaders some much needed punch!
The Crusaders were #2 in Heal points coming into today's game and are now 3-1 on the season.
